Dr Zainab obtained her BSc (Chemistry) from Laurentian University of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada in 1988. She served as a Production Chemist in Rubberex (M) and Rubberthread (M) Sdn Bhd, companies under IGB Group. She then joined Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (now known as MPOB) and obtained her Master in Science from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1998. She then obtained her PhD in Chemistry from UKM in 2010. Her research specializes in synthesis of surfactants and formulations of products based on oleochemicals or palm ingredient.

Dr Zainab, holds a position as the Director of Advanced Oleochemical Technology Division (AOTD) of Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) since 27th July 2016 – 9th August 2019. After more than 20 years in Oleochemical Research, she recently obtained her Master of Business Administration from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia-Graduate School of Business (UKM-GSB).

Dr Zainab is a Board members of MPOB-UKM Endowmen, Scientific Advisory Committee of UKM-Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), Board of Trustees Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Board member of Palm Oil Research and Technical Service of MPOB (PORTSIM) China, Member of Research Advisory Committee of PORTSIM China, and Main Committee of Mechanisation & Automation Research Consortium of Oil Palm (MARCOP).
